Action Stands

Keep track of your Heroes, Enemies and Armies!

Dark-Platypus Action Stands offer a convenient way to keep track of individual damage and effects on identical figures, whether in a role-playing game, tactical skirmish game, or large-scale strategic wargame.

What are Action Stands?

Action stands are a solution to book-keeping confusion for gamers

Basically, Action Stands are small pewter widgets (we call 'em 'Stands') that prominently feature different numbers on them, and that easily (temporarily or permanently) affix to your gaming miniatures to assign those numbers to your otherwise identical figures! They are sold in packs of 10, and each pack also includes 10 number stickers (available in a variety of colors and denominations). Each Action Stand also contains two peg-holes, enabling you to insert colored pins or flags to further differentiate figures or assign them temporary statuses (this one is wounded, that one is paralyzed, etc.)

To provide an example of how they work and what they're good for, look to the picture below. Here we see a dungeon room filled with 6 skeletal wyrmlings (sculpted by me; available from Goodman Games). Your adventuring party (not pictured) bursts into the room. In round one, the fighter deals 8 points of damage to one of them, the elf ranger shoots another one for 3 points, and the cleric turns two of them. In future rounds, the DM is going to have a little bit of work on his hands remembering which was which, especially if they start moving around the room!!

Now, we will use a little bit of poster tac to affix some Action Stands to the wyrmlings. They now have numbers on them, 1 through 6, so it is easy to tell them apart at a glace, even if they move about the room. The DM can write on his control sheet that number 4 took 8 point of damage and number 2 took 3 points, and can just add to those numbers as the creatures take more wounds. Also, the purple pins inserted into the the Action Stands of numbers 1 and 6 remind us that those two creatures have been turned.

I've used a role-playing example here, but these things are equally at home in space combat simulations, massive battlefields both archaic and futuristic, and really just about any game where you might want to tell otherwise similar units apart. Get sets with different colors and you can easily assign teams or differentiate squads. Use some colored pins from your local craft store to add extra versatility...you can easily assign different temporary states to your units by using the pins. This guy has the torch, that ship is in an uncontrolled spin, that unit is being targeted by enemy artillery.

Another one of the best features is their re-usability. They quickly and easily affix to just about any gaming figure's base with just a little bit of poster tac (wonderful stuff, available at any office supply store...it is essentially sticky putty that can be removed at any time without leaving any residue). You can attach them to the top of the bases, or if there isn't room, even use the little tab on the Action Stands to affix them to the underside of the bases. That means you don't need to buy enough for every single figure in your collection (although if you want to, please do!!), just enough for the guys you'll have on the table at one time. When one battle or game is done, just pop them off the figs, and stick 'em to the next minis to see action. If you don't want to mess with the poster tac, you can even just set them next to the minis you need to mark, and move the stands when you move the figs, because the Action Stands will stand up on their own!

I currently do not have a whole lot of set options available, mainly because I am not sure what you, the customer, are going to need! If you would like to see Action Stands available with stickers in any number or color configuration (or even symbols!), please drop me an email and I'll see what I can do!!

ACTION STANDS SETS

Each set below contains 10 Action Stands (assembly required), and 10 stickers. The stickers vary by denomination (1-10 or 11-20, for example) by text color, and by background color. Thus, set one, reading 1-10, White on Black, means that it contains stickers with numbers reading from 1 to 10, in white text on a black background.
