Creature Stat Card This card contains all of the information generally needed to run a monster in any D&D encounter.
I was inspired to create these for my own use after discovering the convenience of the monster stat cards provided with the D&D miniatures game. I found it was very easy to simply go to my collection of cards, pull out the appropriate monster cards, and slide them into some card protector sleeves. Then I could just keep them behind my screen, and pull them out as I needed them. I could even keep track of damage and other info right on the cards, by writing on the card sleeves with my wet-erase marker!
Assembly
The first thing you will need to do is print some of the cards out. Click on either of the two links below to get a page of either standard 2-1/2"x3-1/2" cards or larger 3-1/2"x5" cards (Erica likes the bigger ones, which is why I include them here). You will need Acrobat Reader to view them.
Print the page out, on some nice cardstock if you have it. There are six cards on the smaller card page, and 4 on the larger card page. You will see some little guidelines around the outside edges of the card layout. Use a ruler to line up with those lines, and then use an x-acto knife to CAREFULLY cut the cards out. I suggest first cutting all of the horizontal lines, and then going back and cutting all of the vertical lines. Don't cut all the way to the edge of the paper, and that way everything will stay together until you make your final cuts. Use a cutting matt underneath your paper if you have one, or just a piece of cardboard if you don't (to protect your work-table and make the cutting a little easier). This takes some practice but the cards will look really nice if you do it right. :)
Suggestions for Use
Use a .5 or.3 mechanical pencil to fill out the cards, or just a very sharp pencil, so that you can write tiny enough to get all the information in there.
Once your card is filled out, you can keep it in a 9-pocket card protector page with your adventure notes, and then put it in one of the small single-card sleeves (the kind used to protect your magic cards when playing) when you are ready to use it.
ID # Circle: Use this to aid in keeping track of different monsters when you have several different creatures in an encounter.
Reference: Use this line at the bottom to write down the monster book and page that the creature comes from, in case you need to look it up during play.
Initiative: Write in the creature's Initiative Roll at the beginning of combat. It might also be a good idea to have your players fill out Stat Cards for themselves. Then at the beginning of any fight, you simply arrange all the cards into a deck in their Initiative orders, highest on top. Then just "Run through the deck" to run your combat. When a character holds an action, remove his card from the deck, and return it in it's new location when he finally acts. When a creature or character dies, just remove the card from the deck. Otherwise, just keep the cards in the same order, and keep running through them until combat ends.
HP: Write the creatures total Hit Points in the red box, and then use the red field below to keep a running tally of it's current total as it gets injured. You can also keep track of your players' hit points this way, so you know when they are going to go down and don't accidentally kill them.
